《城市猎人》TV动画共有4部，另有3话TV Special，4部分别是《城市猎人》、《城市猎人2》、《城市猎人3》与《城市猎人'91》，皆为读卖电视台与日升动画制作、日本电视系首播。

城市猎人

1987年4月6日－1988年3月28日期间首播，于19:00 - 19:30播放，共51集。

城市猎人2

1988年4月2日－1989年7月1日期间首播，于18:00 - 18:30播放，共63集。

城市猎人3

1989年10月15日 - 1990年1月21日期间首播，于19:00 - 19:30播放，共13集。

城市猎人91

1991年4月28日 - 1991年10月10日期间首播，前10集于19:00 - 19:30播放，后面3集于16:00 - 17:30播放，共13集。

该漫画在正式连载前，作者北条司先后推出了《城市猎人 - XYZ》以及《城市猎人 - 双刃剑》两篇试验性短篇。因受到高度好评而终于在1985年—1991年期间正式长期连载与集英社旗下的《少年Jump周刊》杂志。

1985年－1991年期间在日本播放过4季共140集电视动画。此外还有3部动画电影，3部动画特别篇，以及一部官方真人版电影。

该作品以生动幽默的风格描述一位好色、身怀绝技而又有自身缺点、令人可爱又可恨，自称城市清道夫的冴羽獠（盗版时期港台曾译作：孟波[2]；中国大陆曾译作：寒羽良）与他的同伴槙村香所组合的私家侦探事务所的故事。

故事中想要联络城市猎人的方法是在新宿的留言板上写上暗号XYZ，如此一来城市猎人就会跟你连络，传说只帮助美女。

何谓XYZ呢？XYZ是英文字母中的最后三个字母，意味着后面没了，我已经没有退路了的意思。
